  • Top 10 sailing equipment you must have on your boat

Taking your boat out on the water, especially when the weather starts to get warmer, is one of the most precious pastimes ever. Before sailing off onto a wonderful adventure however, there are a few steps you should take. One of them is making sure you have all the necessary sailing safety equipment on board. From sailing gear to sailing clothes, you should pack smart in order to be prepared out in the water.

The list of the best sailing gear to have with you depends on the size of the boat, the length of your travel, and the number of people who will be joining you. There are however a few things that you should always keep in the sailboat, yacht, or any other vessel, despite the above parameters. So here are the top 10 sailing equipment that you should never forget before leaving the marina:

    1. First and most importantly, remember to pack appropriate personal floating devices for each of the passengers on board. These lifejackets can prevent life-threatening situations and are the most crucial item to have in any boat.
    2. A sound signaling device is also important to have, especially when sailing in reduced visibility. You can either have a whistle, compressed gas horn, or electric horn.
    3. Make sure to bring with you a first aid kit. Boats are as unpredictable as any vehicle. Be prepared for sudden adversities.
    4. Keep a hand pump with you at all times in case the boat takes on water. The pump can be used to drain the water when at sea. It will not offer a full solution but it can provide the time needed for the boat to dock to the nearest marina.
    5. Invest in a good navigation system so you never get lost. If you do not want to spend too much on an electronic GPS, you can also use recently updated nautical maps and a compass.
    6. Do not forget to take a fire extinguisher as most boats have quite extensive electrical cabling and devices, plus plenty of fuel tanks and fuel-related equipment that could go on fire during a trip.
    7. Keep a VHF radio with you so that you can be connected even if there is no cell phone coverage.
    8. Take appropriate sailing clothes with you. These include cotton clothes as well as waterproof vests, hats, comfortable shoes, and sailing gloves.
    9. Make sure to pack a toolbox with at least the bare minimum in it. Include a screwdriver, spare nuts, bolts, split pins and other tools, even small engine parts and spares if you have space in the box.
    10. Lastly, do not forget the license of your vessel if it has any. Make sure your boat is marked accordingly and that all your documents are up to date.

In order to keep track of all your boat equipment, spares, licenses, inspection certificates or anything else related to your boat, we suggest you use an all in one boat management app, like TheBoatApp, so you can have all your marine data organized and catalogued as well as accessible online and offline.
